Hallyu,
The Korean Wave
Hallyu is Korea's recent surge in the entertainment industry has sparked tremendous interest from abroad, particularly South East Asia. Beginning with Korea TV dramas such as "Winter Sonata", the success soon spread to the field of movies and popular music. Tourists now have the opportunity to learn more about up to date entertainment news and popular sites frequented by movie casts and crews taking place throughout Korea.



Drama

Winter Sonata (2002)
Winter Sonata was the beginning of Hallyu.
It spreaded to the world very fast,
and it was loved a lot from Japan.
The actor Bae, YongJun and the actress Choi, JiWoo became very famous
through this drama.

Synopsis:
Joon-sang moves to a new high school in search for his biological father.
Yu-jin and Sang-hyuk are close childhood friends, although Sang-hyuk wants to be more than a friend, Yu-jin sees him as a brother.
On a trip together with other high school mates, Oh Chelin , Jin-suk and Yong-kuk , Yu-jin is saved after an accident by Joon-sang.
They become close and she opens up his cold heart.
However, circumstances and fate dictate that their love will never be.
He abruptly disappears from their lives.
Ten years later, the old High School buddies gather to celebrate
Yu-jin and Sang-hyuk’s soon-to-be wedding.
Yu-jin, who was deeply in love with Joon-sang, still has a fire in her heart for him.
But at the party, Oh Chelin’s new boyfriend arrives, who appears the same as Joon-sang.







You are beautiful (2009)

You are  beautiful was famous among teenagers.
It is very sweet romance story.
Jang, GeunSuk, the main actor of 'You are beautiful' is a very famous actor in Asia.
He has good appearance and nice voice,
and it attracts a lot of girls.

Synopsis:
Tae Kyung and On Yu are in search of a new member for their idol group, A.N.JELL.
 However, Mi Nam suffers an injury at the last moment.
So Mi Nyu, his twin sister, is asked to step in for her brother.
The rest of the drama follows the behind-the-scenes life of an idol group.







Secret Garden (2011)
Secret Garden was very famous not only in Korea but also in overseas.
It is very deep and serious love story between two main characters.
Hyun Bin is a very famous actor in Korea with his
unique soft image and voice.
The OST of this drama 'The Man' also became popular and
re-made by many the other singers in overseas.
Synopsis:
The drama tells the story of Kim Joo Won (Hyun Bin),
an arrogant and eccentric CEO who maintains the image of seeming perfection,
and Gil Ra Im (Ha Ji Won), a poor and humble stuntwoman whose beauty and body are the object of envy amongst top actresses.
Their accidental meeting, when Joo Won mistakes Ra Im for actress Park Chae Rin,
 marks the beginning of a tense, bickering relationship,
 through which Joo Won tries to hide a growing attraction to Ra Im
that both confuses and disturbs him.
To complicate matters further, a strange sequence of events results in them swapping bodies.







Rooftop Princess (2012)

Rooftop Princess is a fantasy romantic comedy.
It is about a Joseon crown price who after his wife dies mysteriously,
time travles to the future where he encounters familiar faces,
modern-day devies, and corporate intrigue.
 Park, YouChun, one of the actor of this drama, is also a member of  'Dong-bang-shin-gi'
which is a famous singer group.

Synopsis:

Joseon era (300 years ago)

Lee Gak is the Crown Prince. When he is ready to marry, Lee Gak wants to marry a beautiful woman. Bu Yong and Hwa Yong are sisters. Hwa Yong, the older sister wants to marry Crown Prince Lee Gak, but her father makes it clear that younger sister Bu Yong will marry the Crown Prince. Hwa Yong is so upset, she uses an an iron to burn Bu Yong’s face, pretending it was an accident. Now, Bu Yong carries a big scar on her face. Eventually, older sister Hwa Yong marries Crown Prince Lee Gak. Time passes and are now adults. Younger sister Bu Yong is now a smart woman, good with needlework. Older sister Hwa Yong is uneasy that her husband, Crown Prince Lee Gak, and Bu Young get along well. One day, Crown Prince Lee Gak wakes up in the early morning. He finds that Hwa Yong is not next to him. He feels something strange about the situation and calls for an eunuch. At this time, an eunuch comes running to the Crown Prince and informs him that Hwa Yong is found dead in a pond. Lee Gak suspects that his wife’s death is not by accident. He puts together a team to investigate his wife’s death. When the team awaits to interview a witness, a group of assassins appears and chases them. Crown Prince Lee Gak and his men are chased to the edge of a cliff. The group jumps off the cliff. The Prince from the Joseon era travels to the future with his entourage Song Man Bo, Woo Yong Sul and Do Chi San.

Seoul 2012

When Park Ha was young, her father remarried and Park Ha gained older step-sister Se Na. When their parents left for work, older step-sister Se Na despised having to take care of her younger sister. One day, while younger sister Park Ha sleeps inside a truck, the truck suddenly departs. Even though Se Na sees the truck leaving, she turns around and pretends that it isn’t happening. Time passes, younger sister Park Ha is now living in America. While, Park Ha sells fruits as a sidewalk vendor, Yong Tae Yong sees her and feels a connection with Park Ha. Yong Tae Moo appears in front of Yong Tae Young. They are cousins. The following day, the two men boards a yacht. While the boat is sailing, they have a small fight and Yong Tae Yong falls into the water. His cousin doesn’t attempt to save Yong Tae Yong and actually attempts to hide evidence that he was there. He then jumps into the water and swims away. At this time, younger sister Park Ha receives a phone call that her family has been located in South Korea. Park Ha travels to South Korea and learns that her father has just passed away. At her father’s funeral, Park Ha meets her step-mother and older step-sister Se Na. Park Ha has no memory of how she was separated from her family. Park Ha settles down in Seoul. One night, when she comes back to her rooftop room, she discovers four men, in Korean traditional clothing, sitting in her room…..







Music


Korean music is well known as 'K-pop.'
K-pop is a musical genre originating in South Korea
that is characterized by a wide variety of audiovisual elements.
First gaining popularity in East Asia back in the late 1990s,
K-pop entered the Japanese music market towards the turn of the 21st century.
In the late 2000s, it grew from a musical genre into a subculture among teenagers
and young adults of East and Southeast Asia.
Currently, the spread of K-pop to other regions of the world, via the Korean wave,









BIGBANG

BigBang is a South Korean male group under the management of YG Entertainment.
Formed in 2006, the group consists of G-Dragon, T.O.P, Taeyang, Daesung, and Seungri.
Songs: Haru Haru, Fantastic baby, Yout wedding.






2NE1

2NE1 is a four-member South Korean girl group formed by YG Entertainment in 2009.
The band consists of CL, Minzy, Dara, and Bom.
The name 2NE1 combines the phrases "21st century" and "new evolution

Girl's Generation

Girls' Generation is a South Korean girl group formed by S.M. Entertainment in 2007.
The nine member group consists of Taeyeon, Jessica, Sunny,
Tiffany, Hyoyeon, Yuri, Sooyoung, Yoona and Seohyun.
Songs: The Boys, Oh!, I Got A Boy.







2PM

2PM is a South Korean boy band managed by JYP Entertainment.
The current members are Jun. K, Nichkhun, Taecyeon, Wooyoung, Junho and Chansung. Former leader, Jay Park, officially left the group in early 2010.

Super Junior

Super Junior is a South Korean boy band.
Formed in 2005 by producer Lee Soo-man of S.M. Entertainment,
the group comprised a total of thirteen members at its peak.

PSY

Park Jae-sang, better known by his stage name Psy, stylized PSY,
is a South Korean singer, songwriter, rapper, dancer,
record producer and television personality.
Psy is known domestically for his humorous videos and stage performances,
and internationally for his hit single "Gangnam Style."
He now became an world star.
Songs: Gang Nam Style, Gentleman, Right Now, Lady.

This is a promoting video for South Korea by Psy.








Sports


Kim, Yuna

Kim is the first South Korean figure skater to win a medal at an ISU Junior
or Senior Grand Prix event, ISU Championship, and the Olympic Games.
She is the first female skater to win the Olympic Games, the World Championships,
the Four Continents Championships and the Grand Prix Final.
She is one of the most highly recognized athletes and media figures in South Korea
"Queen on Ice," Yuna Kim is the national figure skating icon in Korea.
"Samsung Anycall-Hauzen 2010 All That Skate Summer,"
the latest ice show in South Korea, was successfully held in Seoul
with world famous figure skating stars
including "Queen" Kim Yuna. Also, in October 2010,
Kim successfully hosted an ice show in Los Angeles, California.




 Park, Tae Hwan

Park Tae-hwan is a South Korean swimmer.
Tae-Hwan is the first Korean to win a medal in swimming,
as well as the first Asian swimmer to win a gold medal in the 400-meter freestyle.
He is a member of the South Korean national swimming team, based in Taereung, Seoul.
He won a gold medal in the 400 meter freestyle and a silver in the 200 meter freestyle events at the 2008 Summer Olympics.





Son, Yeon Jae

Son Yeon-jae is a South Korean rhythmic gymnast.
A member of the South Korean national gymnastics team, based in Taereung, Seoul.,
she is the 2010 Asian Games bronze medalist, and is managed by the IB Sports agency.
 Son currently trains in Russia.
She is a new rasing sport star in South Korea.
